That Effing Show is a satirical news show that laughs, pokes fun and points out the (often) obvious and not-so-obvious absurdities of Malaysian socio-political life. In addition to the "liberal/progressive news-commentary thingy", the show embarks on special projects such as the wildly viraled I Am A Macha music video, and the ASTRO World Cup ad spoofs.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is an obvious reference, but the creators also like to think that they suckle at the comedic breasts of P. Ramlee, Monty Python, Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with David Letterman and Jangan Ketawa.
That Effing Show aired its first episode on PopTeeVee on 3 February 2010. The show airs weekly, on Tuesdays, and depending on the poor internet connection, sometimes on Wednesdays.
Ezra Zaid (anchorman/co-writer) has been described as "exactly the kind of publisher we need in a contemporary Malaysia: broadminded, enthusiastic, funny and straight-talking". He is the proprietor of publishing house ZI Publications, which has produced some of Malaysia's most important and best-selling books in Bahasa Malaysia and English over the past few years, including Amir Muhammad's Rojak, Farish Noor's Di Balik Malaysia: Dari Majapahit ke Putrajaya, Hishamuddin Rais' Tapai, Marina Mahathir's 50 Days: Rantings by MM and Zaid Ibrahim's Saya Pun Melayu.
Umapagan Ampikaipakan (co-writer) is a freelance writer and book critic. He resides, for the most part, within the pages of the New Straits Times, where he ruminates on everything from the idiosyncrasies of Malaysian politics to his unnatural obsession with the written word. In the fall of 2008, he covered the U.S. Presidential Elections for his newspaper. He can also be found (his disembodied voice, that is) rambling over the airwaves, on BFM 89.9, where he is their resident book guy, as well as the host of their movie show, WTF: What the Flick.
Faiqsyazwan Kuhiri (camera/editor) is a graduate of the Department of Performance & Media, Sunway University College. He is currently enrolled in the prestigious University of Life (UOL). He is a self-proclaimed cinéphile and a snob. He is an out of work actor. He is contemplating the idea of getting a real job. He is one of PopIN and PopTeeVee's trusted youth. He is also a freelance video-editor.
Bryan Chang (graphics) is a freelance multimedia designer with half a diploma in that discipline. Part of PopIN's video team, he intends to change (daydreams of changing) the world someday through a combination of typography, film and music. At the moment, he's happy to be the resident design fler for the burgeoning Pop-Empire.
Mark Teh (creative producer) is a theatre director, researcher and educator, whose diverse, collaborative projects are particularly concerned with the issues of Malaysian history, memory, youth and participation. Over the past few years, he has directed Gostan Forward, Dua, Tiga Dalang Berlari and Baling (membaling), co-curated the Emergency Festival and Asian Youth Artsmall, and co-produced 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka, Project Angkat Rumah, The Fairly Current Show and That Effing Show. He is a member of the Five Arts Centre and PopIN collectives, and teaches at The One Academy of Communication Design and the Department of Performance & Media, Sunway University College.[ back to start ]
